Getting Started

Starting Acupuncture Care with San Antonio Family Integrative Health is easy, and will be one of the most beneficial things you will ever do for your own health.

The first step, is to complete our Initial Acupuncture Intake packets. Please visit our New Patients page for additional important information.

Your First Visit

Your first Acupuncture visit with Dr. Sweeney consists of an initial consultation, followed by a short physical exam which includes a M.E.A.D. scan of your meridian system, followed by an initial treatment.

Dr. Sweeney will begin by talking with you about your specific issues and concerns.  He will then give you a general overview of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Dr. Sweeney strives to ensure that each new patient knows the benefits, and potential risks, of Acupuncture, and what the potential outcome of treatment might be.

After the initial discussion, Dr. Sweeney will conduct a TCM-based physical assessment based on your specific needs.  The purpose of the physical assessment is to obtain a base-line “snap-shot” of your physical, mental, and overall health status.  The results will be used now to get you started, and again later to assess your progress.  The exam takes about half an hour, and will consist of evaluation of vital signs (such as heart rate, pulse, and blood pressure); he will inspect your skin, your hair, face, eyes, and even look at your tongue.  Dr. Sweeney will conduct an overall evaluation of your musculoskeletal system.  He will then conduct a MEAD scan of your Acupuncture Meridians.  Please wear loose-fitting comfortable clothes to your first appointment to enable easy movement.

Immediately following the exam, you will receive your first Acupuncture treatment.  As Dr. Sweeney has only just gathered your information, your first treatment will consist of a general protocol which introduces your body to acupuncture, and helps to prepare you for further treatments.  On subsequent visits, your treatments will be structured based on your specific needs.

Before your next appointment, Dr. Sweeney will review all of the available information, and create a treatment plan tailored specifically for you, designed to achieve maximum benefit, in the shortest time.

Your Second Visit

At the beginning of your next visit, Dr. Sweeney will review your exam findings with you, and explain your treatment goals, along with the expected benefits.  Your plan will include a detailed explanation of your condition, the type(s) of treatment needed to correct it, and the expected frequency and duration of the visits.

You will then receive your second acupuncture treatment, based on your specific needs, and the goals of your care.

Please allow about 60 minutes for the Report of Findings and 2nd treatment.  Please have your calendar ready to schedule follow-up visits based on your treatment plan.

Regular Visits

The average Acupuncture visit can last from 45-60 minutes; it will involve a brief discussion with Dr. Sweeney about your current health status, followed by the appropriate treatment.  If needles are used, they must be in place for at least 30 minutes for best results.

Note…In some more complicated cases, extra time may be needed for additional therapy.  Dr. Sweeney will discuss this with you, and arrangements will be made as necessary.

You may also be given home-care exercises, physical activities, lifestyle modifications, or other instructions.  Roughly 40% of your success rides on YOU!…Faithfully following through with these recommendations will speed up your progress, help you feel better faster, and help the effectiveness of your care last longer.  Eventually, we will be able to space your maintenance visits out further and further.

“We want our patients to be informed; this empowers each person with the knowledge to make educated decisions about his or her own health care”
